Mike Murphy – gave a real life safety message about an accident that happened at a fun fly in 2014 at the Torks Club in Quincy, Ohio. Two men had hollered on the field and went out to the far side of the runway to the left end to look for a lost tail wheel. Another flyer decided to take off, claims another club officer said it was ok for him to take off, and proceeded to try to take off in a 10mph cross wind. Another individual saw what was about to happen and hollered a warning to the guys on the field. One of the guys on the field, with his back to the runway, threw up his arm to cover his head, and was struck by the sixty size plane in the upper arm and shoulder area. After a 15 minute wait for the ambulance (probably quicker than an ambulance could get to us at our field), many stitches, multiple operations to try to repair muscles and tendons, etc. the injured party still cannot feel or properly use his hand. Thus, he has not enjoyed his hobbies of golf and flying since the accident. Law suits for the recovery of $190,000 in medical bills is still pending. Lawyers asked many pointed questions about club rules, spotters, competency of flyer, AMA safety rules, etc. Needless to say, guys who were once friends now have a strained relationship and the club has placed a higher regard for safety practices at the field. Mike’s conclusion was that we need to review our rules and be sure we follow the rules. Remember, all of us are Safety Officers!
Jim Herron made the observation that it is always safer to wait until planes land before going out on the field. Also, all members and guests must follow the rules.
(Note: AMA rules are posted on the wall next to the pin box and KRAM rules are posted on the inside of the left pin box door. Please read and observe…)
Jim Grant – Swap Shop 2019 – 45 tables sold as of the meeting and 58 packs of raffle tickets had been passed out to members (with money returned for 15 of these so far). Set up on Sunday morning will be at 7:00am with coffee available.
Jim Herron – Maintenance – The grass planted north of the runway is sprouting well. Staples left in the grass from the runway work have resulted in another flat tire on the lawn mower sulky. New tire and tube installed. Always buy the “good belt” when replacing drive belts on tractor / mower. The cheap one does not last! The season end is just about here – maybe one or two more cuttings!
Steve O’Connor – report out on the Vets fly in 9/7. It was a great day! We had 12 vets with 4 care givers along with 36 other folks for lunch. Food and pot luck items were plentiful, the weather was great, the vets stayed until after 2:30pm – they enjoyed it so much they did not want to leave. Overall a great day! (Thanks to Steve and Kim for a great day!) Steve also presented a recap of all event activity and the cost of each. Again, nice job Steve.
Matt Slobe – report out on the Night Fly event – had 57 people, 29 of them pilots, attend. Landing fee of $5 per pilot generated $145 and the food donation jar contributed another $165. Thanks to the Markley’s for the donation of the pork for dinner. (A lot of safety discussion followed with issues like FAA rules, definition of dark, when lights are required or field closed, flying over people and vehicles, etc. to be discussed and resolved prior to next flying season.)
George Orphan – son John will be in town this month to start filming the promotional video. If asked, please help in any way possible.
