Meeting Minutes – January 4th 2011

Call to order at 7:00 pm by President Mark Schmaltz

Mark noted that Floyd Atkins was laminating AMA cards in the back of the room.

Note number of members present:   19
No guests were present at this meeting.

No corrections, changes, or discussion of December Minutes took place.
Motion to approve by:  Lee Frederickson
        Seconded by:  Danny Osborn
        Vote: carried

Financial Report:  Presented by Dan McLaren.  Club members can see the report on the web site.  It was noted that only 61 of the 104 members from 2010 have renewed their membership as of 1/3/11.  A question was raised concerning the 10 known members from 2010 that have indicated that they will not be renewing their membership in 2011.  The question was why they were dropping membership.  The answer for each was different – from joining the Army to moving out of the area…  No recurring issues noted.
Motion to accept by:  Ed Buck
        Seconded by:  Tom O’Keefe
        Vote:  carried

OLD BUSINESS:
Fruit Baskets delivered.  Yours truly accompanied Randy Bursley and Dave Kingma on the delivery.  I publicly admitted that I was very surprised at the genuine gratitude displayed by the recipients for the effort on the part of the club to deliver the fruit baskets.  I stand corrected, the $300 was money well spent from the standpoint of public relations and good will toward our immediate neighbors.

New Years Day fun fly had a few hardy souls attend.  Danny Osborn, Nik Zinsli, and John and Jase Dussia all flew in the thirty mile an hour winds.  The rest of us stood by a nice fire and ate Sloppy Joes that Roz had sent along with Danny.  I know Nik took a few pictures so check out the web site.

Nik reported out on “Builders Club” survey.  Sixteen members responded so we are going to give it a try.  The first meeting will be in Mark’s garage at 6:00 pm Wednesday, January 12.  There is an email from Nik to all members with directions and more information.  We also have approval to use the basement of Hobby World if we care to in the future (West Michigan club does this now).

Danny Osborn reported that his wife is exploring the possibility of a March (maybe get some snowbirds back) banquet.  More to follow next month.

NEW BUSINESS:
Lee Frederickson reported there is indoor flying at the Woodland Sports Arena (directly across from Ryders Hobby) every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 AM until 2 PM.  Cost is $10 per day.

Lee Frederickson made a motion to have a sunset salute “big bird fly in” as we did last year.  Date would be Wednesday, July 13.  No rain date.  Money for dinner would be collected at the event and would cover any and all costs not allocated by the club.  Lee Lubbers seconded the motion and those in attendance supported the motion.  Lee and Lee were instructed to get with Ben Lopez, Social Director, and discuss details for possible inclusion in the 2011 budget.

Lee Frederickson brought up for discussion the idea of setting aside some time frame where the field would be open to electric flying only.  He contends that some of the park fliers and smaller electric pilots are intimidated by the bigger gas and glow planes flying at the same time.  It was noted that these pilots often fly closer in (in violation of club field rules).  It was noted that Sunday morning is already defined as electric only until 1:00 PM.  After some discussion Allen Simpson motioned the issue be tabled.  The motion was seconded by Dan McLaren and the vote carried.  The issue will be brought up next month under old business.

Mark Schmaltz brought to the attention of the club the “Hobby King” offer for “free” stuff to support club events.  Floyd Atkins cautioned that he and others he knows had stolen credit card issues with this company when dealing with it in China.  Ben Lopez noted that they have opened a US store so hopefully that issue will go away.  Ed Buck questioned the club openly supporting this China based retailer as a conflict versus our support of local hobby shops.

Ben Lopez suggested we may want to see if Ryders would be interested in the 28th Street Cruse display that we did at Mel Trotter in 2010.  He noted they might value the advertising and possible draw to the shop.  Mark directed him to make contact with contacts at Ryders.  More to follow.

Mark asked Ben Lopez to follow up with the Veteran’s Home to make sure we have a date on there calendar for 2011.  There is a concern that no date was established due to the rain out in 2010.

Mark reported that the web site will have a link to CafePress.com for acquiring clothing with the KRAM logo screen printed on them.

50 / 50 drawing provided $14.50 to the club.
